History

The Murray Library was officially opened on 31st December 1908, nine months after the laying of the foundation stone. The building was made possible with the bequest of £4,000 by Anstruther born David Murray who made his wealth in Adelaide, Australia. The Murray Library was originally set up to provide library and reading rooms with educational and recreational facilities for the local community.

Over many years the weather took its toll on the sandstone building. In 2013 the building was completely refurbished with the front part, known as the Murray Library Hostel, becoming a backpackers hostel and the former snooker room at the rear becoming creative industry units, known as the Murray Studios.

The Trustees aim to generate surplus funds from the above two ventures, which can be used to support educational and recreational projects in the local community.
